WE STAND WITH IMMIGRANT FAMILIES

WHAT IS PUBLIC CHARGE?

It’s a term used in immigration law to refer to a person who is primarily dependent on the government to meet basic needs.

The Trump administration wants to dramatically expand the definition of “public charge” to include more programs that families use when they fall on hard times.

WHY IT MATTERS

Should this proposal go into effect, participation in those programs would count against visa and green card applicants.

We can fight back against this proposal.

HOW YOU HELPED AND WHAT'S NEXT

Concerned Americans like you submitted more than 215,000 comments about this proposed rule change.

Now, the government is reading, counting, reviewing, and considering all public feedback before issuing a final rule. We don’t know how long that will take.

As we wait for a final decision, remember that nothing has changed. Follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram @WeAreUnidosUS and visit this site for updates.
